The Vancouver CASP Conference Planning Committee is honoured to host the 2011 Canadian Association of Suicide Prevention Conference – NEW CONVERSATIONS ON SUICIDALITY – on the shores of English Bay in beautiful Vancouver, BC, October 3-5, 2011. Join with people from across the country interested in exploring, expanding and building upon the spectrum of what is known about suicide; prevention, intervention, postvention and research. The intention of this conference is to generate inclusive dialogue and stimulate new conversations on all aspects of suicidality.

We are curious about conversations that explore such matters as:

Deepening our understanding of cultural issues related to suicidality including exploration of diverse forms of culture, cultural competence, and cultural safety
Innovative approaches to capacity building across the spectrum of care including family-centered approaches, shared care and collaborative practice models, crisis response, community follow-up and after care
Spotlighting new and promising practices and strength-based approaches in workplaces, institutions and/or community settings
Moving through crisis response and risk reduction helping to build lives worth living
Impacts of the CASP Blueprint, various provincial strategies and the work of The Mental Health Commission of Canada on suicide prevention

SUICIDE PIP IN THE HEALTHY MINDS, HEALTHY PEOPLE PLAN

On November 1, a 10-year plan to address mental health and substance use with a focus on prevention of problems, early intervention, treatment and sustainability was released by the Province. We are delighted to report that within the 10-year plan, the Suicide PIP Initiative is identified in one of the recommendations:

Implement gatekeeper training programs as described within the Strengthening the Safety Net: A Report on the Suicide Prevention, Intervention & Postvention Initiative of BC,
to effectively identify and intervene with individuals at risk of suicide across the lifespan.

GOLD STAR FOR THE SUICIDE PIP INITIATIVE

The Child Death Review Unit of the BC Coroners Service has awarded the Crisis Centre a Gold Star for its co-leadership of the Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention (PIP) Initiative for BC.

Each year, the Child Death Review Unit awards Gold Stars to agencies or initiatives that have demonstrated excellence and leadership in the area of child health and injury prevention.

WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY EVENT IN VANCOUVER

Join our Initiative Co-Chairs, Dammy Damstrom-Albach and Ian Ross and community agencies for a World Suicide Prevention Day event on Friday September 10 from 12 noon – 1 pm at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The event will include music, speakers and ceremonies of remembrance and healing.

Please bring a pair of new or gently used serviceable shoes for our visual display and donation to Lookout Emergency Aid Society for distribution to those in need.
