Background

  • Suicides and attempted suicides are a significant public health concern in British Columbia (BC).
  • In BC, 376 deaths by suicides occurred in 2006 and 3,176 hospital separations occurred in 2005-06 (74.6 per 100,000 population).
  • Data from emergency departments and medical clinical visits on suicides are not currently available however, it is estimated that the burden of suicide attempts is high.

National and Provincial Efforts to Address Suicide

  • The Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention (PIP) Initiative for BC was developed in response to national efforts by the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) and provincial efforts to strategically address suicide related mortality and morbidity.
  • In BC, movement towards a strategic approach to suicide related mortality and morbidity was driven by a number of factors including:
  • A growing concern over a lack of mutual awareness and limited connection between services offered locally, regionally and provincially for suicide PIP.
  • Interest by government and non-government organizations to develop coordinated approaches and strategic plans to address the mental health of British Columbians.
  • Under this context, a small working group came together to consider the potential for a strategic provincial initiative for suicide PIP.

  • These efforts culminated in the development of a project charter and accompanying budget that was successful in obtaining 18 months of funding.

Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention

  • Suicide PIP is thought to exist on a continuum of service provision and support for individuals at risk of suicide.
  • The prevention, intervention and postvention approach asks: (Grollman,1988 )
  1. What can we do to prevent suicide and suicidal behaviour?
  2. What can we do to intervene when suicidal behaviour is occurring, to enter into helpful communication during a crisis?
  3. What can we do for postvention to provide meaningful support for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide?
